You will only need the USB 1.1 driver (OHCI or UHCI) and USB 2.0 (EHCI) is not required. The kernel module that lirc creates does not have 2.4 support.īe sure your kernel has support for USB.

You must be using a 2.6 kernel for the newer remote. Only difference is the module name - it will be lirc_mceusb instead of lirc_mceusb2. I would think it's the same as the newer remote instructions below, but I can't verify. Note: The below assumes you are using LIRC, which is no longer required for basic setups not requiring LIRC's more complete feature set.

  • Some newer devices may require post lirc-0.8.6 cvs for full functionality.
  • IR transmit and receive are supported on all generations of mce transceivers, as of lirc-0.8.6.
  • You need to adjust all the configuration examples below depending on exactly how the module is named. More recently (2.6.35 kernel and lirc-0.8.7) the module was known as just mceusb. MEDIACENTER REMOTE SOFTWARE

I think the MCE is at best another flawed attempt by Microsoft to market beta quality software at a loss or at the expense of hardware integrators to gain market share in the Tivo market. Also missing - at least from the article - is a discussion of: support for people outside of the US, possible DVB-S card support, external IR Transmitter support (to control a Sat receiver box), and more. And last bat not least, if I look at the additional capabilities of Freevo or MythTV (Weather, RSS feeds, MAME, etc.). ALso free/cheap updates to the ATI software can only make it better - never mind the HDTV capability using the 40$ adapter. The latest ATI Multimedia Center software in conjuntion with an RF (not IR) control is also quite close to the MCE experience - I have one and it works quite well on a cheaper Athlon 2K+. The HP box is certainly worse than a custom assembled Shuttle SSF or Ahanix box.
